Musculoskeletal Pathology Master

Recognize the condition, then decide what the current presentation means for massage.

ConditionWhat it isMassage reasoning
Adhesive capsulitisPainful progressive restriction of glenohumeral motion associated with capsular changesDo not force ROM. Work within irritability/tolerance and reassess.
Baker cystFluid-filled swelling in popliteal region, often associated with knee pathologyAvoid aggressive pressure in popliteal fossa; unexplained swelling needs appropriate evaluation.
BursitisIrritation/inflammation of bursaAvoid aggressive direct compression during acute irritation.
FractureBreak in boneAcute/unstable fracture is not a massage target. Healing status and restrictions govern later work.
Ganglion cystBenign fluid-filled cyst commonly near joint/tendon sheathDo not attempt to crush or rupture it. Modify locally if symptomatic.
GoutInflammatory arthritis caused by monosodium urate crystalsAcute hot painful flare = local avoidance.
Intervertebral disc degenerationAge/load-related disc structural changes, variably symptomaticImaging finding alone does not dictate symptoms. Screen neurological signs and functional tolerance.
Kyphosis/lordosis/scoliosisTerms describing spinal curves/alignment; causes varyDo not promise structural correction through massage. Position for comfort and address goals/function.
Lyme diseaseTick-borne bacterial infectionAcute systemic illness requires medical care; chronic/post-treatment symptoms require individualized tolerance and scope-safe care.
OsteoarthritisDegenerative joint disease involving cartilage, bone and other joint tissuesAdapt to pain/stiffness; avoid forcing irritable joints.
OsteoporosisReduced bone strength and increased fracture riskReduce force/leverage; avoid aggressive compression/manipulation.
Osgood-Schlatter diseaseTraction apophysitis at tibial tuberosity in growing adolescentsAvoid provocative direct pressure over symptomatic tibial tuberosity.
Patellofemoral painPain around/behind patella with multifactorial loading contributorsDo not reduce it to one “tight muscle.” Work within tolerance and consider movement/load history.
Rheumatoid arthritisSystemic autoimmune inflammatory arthritisModify/avoid acutely inflamed joints; consider systemic symptoms, fragility and medications.
SpondylosisDegenerative changes of spineTerm does not by itself tell symptom severity. Screen neurological deficits and tolerance.
SprainLigament injuryAcute swelling/instability requires protection and possible evaluation.
StrainMuscle/tendon injuryTechnique depends on severity/healing stage; avoid aggressive acute loading.
TMJ disorderUmbrella for temporomandibular joint/masticatory disordersExternal massage may be appropriate within training; avoid overclaiming and screen severe locking/trauma.

Muscular/fascial conditions

Dupuytren contractureFibroproliferative palmar fascia disorder causing finger flexion contractureMassage does not simply stretch away established contracture.
FibromyalgiaChronic widespread pain disorder with altered pain processing and common fatigue/sleep symptomsPressure tolerance can vary greatly. Individualize and avoid “no pain no gain.”
Myofascial painRegional pain associated with muscle/myofascial tenderness and trigger-point conceptsUse symptom-guided techniques; avoid claiming every tender spot is a trigger point.
Plantar fasciopathyLoad-related plantar fascia/heel pain conditionConsider irritability and contributing load; do not aggressively grind painful heel.
Shin splints / MTSSExercise-related pain along posteromedial tibial borderAvoid painful tibial grinding; severe focal pain may need evaluation for stress injury.
TendinopathyLoad-related tendon disorderAvoid reflexively treating all tendon pain with aggressive friction.
TorticollisAbnormal neck posture from multiple possible causesCause matters. Acute/new neurological or traumatic presentations require evaluation.
Whiplash-associated disorderSymptoms following acceleration-deceleration neck traumaAcute trauma/red flags first; later work should follow tolerance and medical status.
