Head, Neck, Face & Breathing Muscle Mastery

Posterior neck

MuscleKey attachmentsActionNerve
Splenius capitisNuchal ligament/C7-T3 or T4 SP → mastoid/lateral superior nuchal lineBilateral extension; unilateral ipsilateral rotation/sidebendPosterior rami cervical nerves
Splenius cervicisT3-T6 SP → C1-C3/4 TPBilateral extension; unilateral ipsilateral rotation/sidebendPosterior rami cervical nerves
Rectus capitis posterior majorC2 SP → inferior nuchal lineHead extension/ipsilateral rotationSuboccipital nerve C1
Rectus capitis posterior minorC1 posterior tubercle → inferior nuchal lineHead extensionSuboccipital nerve
Obliquus capitis superiorC1 TP → occiputHead extension/sidebendSuboccipital nerve
Obliquus capitis inferiorC2 SP → C1 TPIpsilateral head/C1 rotationSuboccipital nerve

Anterior/lateral neck

SCMManubrium/medial clavicle → mastoid/superior nuchal lineBilateral cervical flexion with upper cervical extension; unilateral contralateral rotation/ipsilateral sidebendCN XI motor
Anterior scaleneC3-C6 TP → first ribCervical flexion/sidebend; elevates first ribCervical anterior rami
Middle scaleneC2-C7 TP → first ribSidebend; elevates first ribCervical anterior rami
Posterior scaleneC4-C6 TP → second ribSidebend; elevates second ribCervical anterior rami

Safety: the anterior/lateral neck contains carotid arteries, jugular veins, vagus nerve, brachial plexus roots/trunks and other sensitive structures. Precise anatomy matters more than pressure.

Mastication

MasseterZygomatic arch → lateral ramus/angle mandibleElevates mandible; assists protrusionMandibular division CN V3
TemporalisTemporal fossa → coronoid process mandibleElevates; posterior fibers retract mandibleDeep temporal nerves, V3
Medial pterygoidSphenoid/maxillary region → medial mandibular angleElevates/protrudes; grindingV3
Lateral pterygoidSphenoid → mandibular neck/TMJ disc-capsule regionProtraction; assists opening and side-to-side movementV3

Intraoral techniques require specific training, consent, hygiene and jurisdictional/school policy. Do not treat inaccessible deep muscles by blindly pressing through other structures.

Breathing

DiaphragmXiphoid, lower ribs/costal margin, lumbar crura → central tendonPrimary inspirationPhrenic C3-C5
External intercostalsBetween adjacent ribsAssist inspiration/rib elevationIntercostal nerves
Internal intercostalsBetween adjacent ribsInterosseous portions assist forced expiration; interchondral portions can assist inspirationIntercostal nerves

Swallowing overview

Deglutition involves coordinated tongue, suprahyoid, infrahyoid, pharyngeal and laryngeal muscles under complex cranial/cervical nerve control. For massage students, know that the anterior neck is functionally dense and not an appropriate place for indiscriminate deep pressure.
